Job Summary:
As part of the CU Anschutz Financial Aid & Scholarships team, the Senior Financial Aid Advisor has a primary responsibility to independently counsel School of Medicine students regarding educational funding and process matters through two-way conversations and presentations. The Senior Financial Aid Advisor manages a caseload of CU Anschutz students with the responsibility for proactive engagement in the completion of funding applications, required documentation and the completion of tasks that lead to successful funding. This position serves as the primary point of contact for the medical students with the most complex financial situations and needs.
The Senior Financial Aid Advisor participates in recruitment initiatives and outreach programs, retention work, and orientation and graduation activities. The Senior Financial Aid Advisor will work collaboratively with School of Medicine to provide support for all issues, helping students navigate to additional resources as necessary. This position's primary location is at the Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine but may require occasional work hours at the CU Anschutz Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.
Supervision Received: This position reports to the School of Medicine Financial Aid Program Manager at CU Anschutz Financial Aid and Scholarship Office and work closely with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the School of Medicine.
Supervision Exercised: No formal supervision.
Key Responsibilities:
Advising and Student Services- 50%
- Advise School of Medicine (SOM) and Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) students on financial aid options, FAFSA completion, loan repayment programs, and financial literacy resources.
- Provide one-on-one financial counseling for students with complex financial aid situations, ensuring personalized and compliant guidance.
- Explain financial aid requirements and regulations, tailoring information to students' unique educational and financial circumstances.
- Help students identify and apply for external funding sources, including scholarships, Armed Services medical programs, National Health Service Corps, and state-based aid programs.
- Assist fellow financial aid staff in cross-training efforts to enhance service continuity for medical students.
- Act as a point of escalation for sensitive or high-stress financial situations, collaborating with the Program Manager and Student Affairs for appropriate resolutions.
School of Medicine Financial Aid Processing- 20%
- Process and authorize financial aid awards, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations.
- Conduct detailed financial assessments, reviewing tax returns, entitlement letters, and other documentation to ensure proper financial aid distribution.
- Process financial aid professional judgement appeal requests and adjust aid packages based on documented special circumstances.
- Update financial aid content on Canvas and the School of Medicine's web pages, ensuring timely and accurate information.
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions and financial aid adjustments, ensuring alignment with institutional policies.
Events and Outreach - 20%
- Conduct financial aid workshops and presentations for current medical students at key points, including orientation, financial literacy seminars, and residency planning sessions.
- Provide individual advising for prospective students during interview days and second look events, in coordination with the School of Medicine's admissions team.
- Travel to the Colorado State University Fort Collins campus to offer in-person financial aid services to medical students in rural training programs.
Training and Professional Development - 10%
- Stay updated on changes to federal and state financial aid policies, ensuring all advising remains compliant.
- Participate in professional development opportunities such as financial aid conferences, training seminars, and committee meetings focused on graduate and professional medical education financial aid.
- Collaborate with the SOM Financial Aid Program Manager to identify training needs and participate in cross-training initiatives for a well-rounded financial aid team.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
- Two years of professional level experience in financial aid, admissions, advising and/or scholarships office or related field that focuses on customer services in a financial context (ex. Banking, Advisory, Wealth Management, Insurance, University/College, TRIO/Upward Bound etc.).
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Conditions of Employment:
- Must be willing and able to work some evenings and weekend hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with graduate and professional students, especially those in health-related programs.
- Experience working with Oracle PeopleSoft Campus Solutions.
- Experience working with Federal and State aid regulations.
- Knowledge and experience counseling student debt.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Outstanding customer service skills.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional aid regulations and policies.
- Specialized knowledge of programs unique to students in the MD Career path.
- Knowledge of office policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees at all levels throughout the SOM and Financial Aid Office
- Ability to implement and provide quality control based on regulations, policies, and procedures from various levels of government and other sources.
- Ability to communicate policies, procedures, and information with various departments/agencies, staff, and students and train personnel as relevant.
- Ability to independently assess opportunities and situations and provide reasonable solutions focused on problem resolution.
- Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills required

Anticipated Pay Range:
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $52,961 to $61,000.
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
