The Campus Controller's Office (CCO) provides critical support to the mission by ensuring fiscal responsibility, accurate financial reporting, and compliance with laws, regulations, policies/procedures, and contract requirements. This full-time position reports to the Director of Accounting within the Campus Controller's Office and works closely with campus departmental finance and accounting staff as well as the Office of Budget and Fiscal Planning. The Manager supervises one professional staff and coordinates activities between multiple campus departments. This position is responsible for interpreting, evaluating and synthesizing the relevance and importance of wide-ranging federal, state, university, campus and agency-specific accounting rules and relevance and importance of wide-ranging federal, state, university, campus and agency-specific accounting rules and regulations in order to facilitate the selection of appropriate cost accounting methodologies. This position functions independently at an advanced level.
Reporting directly to the Director of Financial Reporting, Systems, and Compliance, the Associate Director has a critical leadership role and is responsible for the overall management and direction of the financial and tax reporting within the Campus Controller's Office (CCO). Work includes the production of financial reports for executive leadership, coordinating campus financial audits, implementation of new reporting standards and guidance, federal and state reporting, and tax reporting and compliance This position is responsible for leading and developing a high performing team as they seek to continuously innovate and improve to keep pace with a rapidly changing, complex, and competitive university environment. The position is responsible for ensuring that transactions are reported in accordance with GAAP, State, Federal and private agency procedures and restrictions, and University rules and regulations.
The Associate Director is responsible for supporting, recommending and implementing strategic plans, while ensuring day-to-day operational excellence for this division of CCO.

Who We Are
The Campus Controller's Office maintains and supports the university's fiscal responsibility through accurate financial accounting and reporting and in compliance with laws, regulations, policies/procedures and contract requirements for sponsored projects. We provide oversight, assistance and training in financial stewardship for the campus.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Financial and Tax Compliance/Reporting
- Assist the Director in leading the preparation of annual audit work papers, financial statements, exhibits and footnotes and various reports due to sponsoring agencies.
- Develop, review and provide analysis for ad hoc, monthly and annual financial reports. Consolidate and provide monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting and analysis to executive leadership. This includes metrics, trend analysis and compliance and diagnostic reporting.
- Provide campus tax reporting and ensure compliance with non-payroll related state and federal tax law including, but not limited to: Sales tax; Unrelated Business Income; and, Excise tax.
- Provide non-sponsored financial state and federal financial reporting including reconciling the campus financial data with the state system (CORE) and other ad hoc external reporting as necessary.
- Lead and coordinate the implementation of new financial reporting guidance including new GASB's, state and/or financial reporting for campus.
- Oversee financial reporting for the university's component unit, ensuring accurate accounting of investments, and managing the reporting of unrealized and realized gains and losses. This includes reporting on direct investments in entrepreneurial ventures (with less than 20% ownership and no significant influence) using the NAV method for valuation, and applying the specific-identification method for determining realized gains and losses on investment sales. Ensure timely and accurate recognition of transactions on closing dates.
- Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Excel and other financial analysis tools to perform complex data analysis, reporting, and enhance financial decision-making processes.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Lead recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of staff to drive a positive and thriving work culture.
- Create and maintain a positive, cooperative work culture, encouraging customer-oriented staff interaction with colleagues, sponsors, and administrators.
- Direct the overall operations for units within specific areas of responsibility.
- Assess and ensure excellent performance standards to be measured quantitatively and qualitatively. This includes defining and implementing baseline metrics.
- Create well-defined roadmap of roles and responsibilities, with clear lines of accountability and ownership within the unit.
- Proactively identify, recommend, and implement process improvements to address areas of concern.
- Enhance business systems and procedures as appropriate to ensure continued compliance with the applicable rules and requirements and to improve business processes, efficiency and service.
- Provide leadership within CCO to achieve fiscal year end goals. This includes tracking requests, reviewing accuracy of supporting work-papers and ensuring deadlines are met, with minimal supervision.
- Assist Director in leading and facilitating in external audits/reviews performed by various sponsors. Coordinate with Financial Business Services, Financial Compliance for the resolution of audits/reviews.
- As a key member of the CCO Leadership Team, recommend and participate in the development of University processes, policies and procedures as needed.
- Work with CCO staff to enhance existing and develop new training courses for presentation to the campus community. Training is to ensure personnel have the knowledge and tools necessary to appropriately comply with GAAP, sponsor rules/regulations, and university policies/procedures.
- Increase engagement opportunities with university stakeholders.
- Initiate and maintain meaningful communication and collaboration with departmental personnel and colleagues on other CU campuses and at the Office of the University Controller.
- Build and maintain effective, collaborative working relationships with peers across campus to ensure services to CCO's clients are effective and provide exceptional value.
- Prepare financial information for diverse audiences including executive leadership, external reporting agencies, and campus constituents. This may include presentations, narratives and graphics. Financial information should be consumable by audience and requires the ability to develop reports ranging from high level summaries to detailed transactions.
- Actively manage technology for the department and campus where applicable.
- Partner with CCO's Associate Directors for the implementation of department, campus, or system-wide upgrades. This includes participation in design sessions, provide feedback to developers, recommend and/or deliver training to users, and provide support to the campus community in areas of need.
- Provide recommendations to manage space and/or technology for the department where applicable.

What We Can Offer
The salary range for this position is $115,000 - $125,000, annually. Relocation allowance may be offered based on departmental guidelines.

What We Require
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Accounting or related field.
- Six years of progressively responsible leadership experience with a proven track record of successfully running a complex organization encompassing accounting, accounts receivable, and restricted fund requirements.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
