Under the supervision of the Coordinator or Manager of Tutoring Services & Academic Support and with the support of the Education Assistants - Academic Support, the Educational Assistant, provides tutoring services for students in the Tutoring Services Center. Assisting students with their academic studies in an effort to improve student retention and completion of their MATC coursework.
Tutors have the important task of helping students succeed in their coursework while pursuing their own coursework toward their careers. Tutors develop employment skills, establish job references, and attain tutoring credentials within a professional academic environment as well as receive formal training in the principles and skills of adult education. With training and experience, tutors can earn internationally-recognized certifications through MATC and the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA).
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Support: Provides tutoring assistance for assigned academic courses and subjects in walk-in situations at the center, in classes, and in small groups as needed. Attends all class periods of any courses to which they are assigned and may be asked to provide additional tutoring outside of class.
Communication and Style: Maintains clear and open communication with students, teachers, staff and academic advisors. Provides regular updates on students' progress and any areas needing attention. Adapts tutoring style to meet students' needs and learning styles; determines appropriate tutoring methods for students.
Software Usage and Tracking: Uses data-tracking systems to log work hours and tutoring visits with students.
Knowledge and Preparation: Reads textbooks, handouts and other educational materials and learns relevant software/applications for assigned academic courses and subjects.
Collaborative Teamwork: Establishes, maintains, and enhances positive work relationships with staff, faculty, and administrators. Serves as liaison between students and faculty.
Ethics and Confidentiality: Practices honesty by demonstrating a consistent and uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles, values, truthfulness and accuracy in all actions. Addresses all student and employee behavior in a confidential and respectful manner.
Continuous Learning & Professional Development: Maintains current knowledge of best practices and standards in tutoring within higher education. Actively organizes and/or participates in applicable workgroups, trainings, workshops, seminars, committees and professional associations or conferences to promote continuous learning.
Other duties: Performs other related duties within the scope of the position as required for the efficient operation of the division and to support institutional objectives.
Qualifications
Required Education & Experience: Minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average overall and a minimum of a B grade in the specific course or in program courses to which assigned to provide tutoring services.

- Proficiency in the use of computers and software specific to position, including Google Suite.
- Ability to work successfully with minimal supervision and serve as a leadership role to others.
Supplemental Information
Hours This is a part-time position (FTE 0.475) up to 19 hours per week. Hours may vary based on needs and are Monday through Friday.
